Starter or alternator? The symptoms differ
- Starter: one loud click or nothing when you turn the key even with a healthy battery; a grinding or whirring noise on start-up; an engine that starts only after several tries.
- Alternator: a battery or charging warning light while driving; headlights that dim at idle and brighten when you rev; a whine that changes with engine speed; a battery that's fine after a jump but dead again within a day.
- Either: a burning-electrical smell under the hood, or a car that has already been through one new battery this year.
What we do on-site
Before replacing anything, we test. For a no-start we check battery voltage, the starter signal, and starter current draw, so we don't swap a starter on a car with a corroded cable. For charging problems we measure alternator output under load and inspect the belt and tensioner, because a slipping belt can mimic a failing alternator. Then we replace the part with a new or quality remanufactured unit, fit a new belt if the old one is worn, and verify charging voltage after the job. Some starters sit on top of the engine and take under an hour; others are behind an exhaust manifold or under an intake and take longer. Your quote will say which.
